What if I Suspect Storm Damage?

Living in cities such as St Pete, Hudson, Holiday, Trinity, and surrounding areas are prone to frequent tropical storms and severe weather. If you suspect that your roof has been subjected to hail, high winds, or severe rain; it is important to have it examined by an experienced and insured roofer immediately.

Even the smallest of leaks can cause costly and dramatic damage to your home’s integrity. The longer you wait, the more problematic the leak will become. Homeowners don’t realize that roofs can be compromised by storm damage, yet have no visible signs of damage from the ground.

Shingle roof wind damage

During a severe storm, high winds will often lift the shingles and break the sealing strip. Then, after the storm, the shingles will lay back down in place and look fine. If that portion of your roof is compromised, it must be replaced.

Within a year or two of a damaged shingle, you will start to experience leaking which will lead to further damage. That is why it’s important to get a roof inspection after extreme weather.

Tile roof wind damage

Tile roofs can suffer from wind damage as well. The tiles on a roof are simply decorative. However, the underlayment underneath the tiles is the water barrier. Strong winds can “chatter” the tiles on your roof. This means the wind gets underneath the tiles and “wiggles” them repeatedly during the storm. Like the shingles, when the storm stops the tiles will look just fine.

Unfortunately this “chattering” of your tiles will cause the nails securing them to the underlayment to come loose. Consequently this will allow water to seep in around the nail holes, causing a leak.

Shingle roof hail damage

Often times when hail hits your roof it will cause “degranulation” of your shingles. Degranulation is only visible on a close inspection by an experienced roofer who knows what to look for. When degranulation occurs your shingles become compromised and the serviceable life of the shingle is significantly shortened.

Tile roof hail damage

Small hailstones will not typically damage your tile roof. However, those larger than 2 inches in diameter can cause hairline cracks, and/or chips that can compromise the integrity of your tiles.
